Tips for Preparing for Mosquito Season with Orkin and a Bug Catching Giveway #LearnwithOrkin

The Bronx Zoo

With temperatures finally starting to heat up, before you know it Summer will be right around the corner which means more time can be spent with your favorite people outdoors. We gladly welcome the evenings where the sun stays up so long the kids are in denial about it being bedtime at 8pm because it's still daylight out. Aren't you looking forward to longer days in the park, enjoying the feeling of sand between your toes at the local beach and trips to explore the beautiful Botanical Gardens and wildlife at the zoo? One thing I AM NOT looking forward to are those pesky mosquitoes! Thanks to the experts at Orkin I'm learning how to keep those nuisances and other pests that surface out of our house.

Disclosure: Opinions expressed are 100% my own & Orkin Rollins Inc supplied us with the materials & product to host this giveaway.

Now don't get me wrong, we don't dislike all insects (I'm obsessed with beetles) I'm all for the ones that don't sting or bite and would never want those that do to be a deterrent that would stop my kids from wanting to explore.  One of our favorite experiences while members of a nature club at the Bronx Zoo was an afternoon of searching for creepy crawlies with our tour guides. The kids were supplied with containers to observe their finds as they over turned rocks and tree branches to discover everything from wiggly worms, to spiders and centipedes.

Living in the city, it's not every day that they get to hang out by a river with other kids like mini scientists investigating. I was so happy to see them just being kids, amazed by the insects they had collected with their little hands. As we navigated our way through the trees down to the Bronx River, I was definitely concerned about mosquitoes hovering over this large mass of sitting water.

As a kid whenever I'd get bit by a mosquito my mom would say to me "oh that's just because you're so sweet, you have sweet blood" and I'd try my hardest not to scratch them but that's pretty tough not to do as a kid. Aside from just being annoying mosquitoes pose serious health risks, hearing about the Zika virus on the news made so many of my pregnant friends nervous, and rightfully so.

I've got to tell you, although i'm not surprised (based on the number of mosquito bites my boys had covering their legs and faces last year) I am far from thrilled that New York was listed #5 on the list of top mosquito inhabited cities - surprisingly up 9 places from last year. Is your city ranked?

To help you better prepare yourself and your family to fight the bite, Orkin presents the “Buzzer Beater” app, which features its deep scientific knowledge of mosquitoes.
