WONDER the Movie Prize Pack Giveaway #ChooseKind, #WonderTheMovie

Imagine a world where we were all accepting of one another's idiosyncrasies. Our differences, although sets us apart should be a reason why we are brought closer together because we all know the day to day would be so boring if we were all the same, wouldn't it?  In the movie Wonder, we're told of the inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out.

I'm really looking forward to viewing Wonder in theaters this weekend because I'm sure it's a feel good movie that's going to be eye-opening and the perfect film to watch and discuss as a family. With two boys, one in middle school and the other in the 2nd grade it's so important to us as parents to make sure they know it's OK to embrace their differences and to be accepting of the uniqueness in their peers. Both of the boys are probably the only ones or 1 out of 2 that have their hair loc'd so they know it's something that their peers are curious about. In he past I remember once that a colleague in the blogging world told our tribe online that she thought that children that wore locks seemed dirty and unkept and she associated them with drugs {not verbatim, but close enough}. I was furious at the stereotype after another blogger text me to tell me that this person had explained to group members that she wasn't a fan of the style.

The boys in Tristan's class sometimes tell him he looks like a girl because we put his locs in a ponytail. I've tried to mix it up with a mini man bun or we'll just let him leave it out, but he  just shrugs it off because he's comfortable with himself. When we're in public adults will stare at their hair, the kids would smile back but sometimes it seemed they were uncomfortable. I'm proud of the boys for embracing their locs, they really do take a lot of pride in them.

I think Wonder prompts great dialogue if parents read it with their children because on some level it's going to be relate-able to the tween or teen in their lives. Back when I was working on my Masters degree, I was an assistant to a class of Tribeca 5th graders. They absolutely loved the book and it was great listening to the discussions they'd have about the growth of the characters, how they related it to their lives, their people. The cast for this family seems perfect {love me some Julia Roberts} and I can't wait to see this story unfold on the big screen with the boys before the month is out. And with Christmas right around the corner I may gift them with the book and workbooks.
