Revel in NY: Girlfriends + Cupcakes at BUTTER LANE

Tacha, Venesa, Marta (The Birthday Girl) & me Dec.2010
Last December my girlfriends and I played tourist in the East Village of NYC to celebrate our girl Marta's B-day. We enjoyed having brunch at the cozy Paprika, poking in and out of the several cutesie boutiques and then made our way to the cupcake paradise confection-ately known as Butter Lane.  First off I need you to keep in mind that if you live here in New York or you are planning to visit, you should click on this not to be missed out on GROUPON  link for their Cupcakes 101 Icing Class including cupcakes to take home, by the time this is posted they will have sold over 1,500 of this deal and it's only been up 2 days!!

Butter Lane is devoted to making  the perfect cupcake. The staff's main focus is on the use of pure ingredients like real vanilla beans, pure cocoa and dark chocolate and they offer both French and American buttercream icing. Butter Lane has been featured on the Food Network show The Best Thing I Ever Ate , the Martha Stewart show and in InStyle Magazine for their phenomenal sweet treats! I love that you can pick your own combinations of icing and cake so that you can sample a bunch and maybe share one or two!  Another reason you must check out Butter Lane is for it's baking classes that are great for celebrating birthdays or even a date. Throw on an apron and have fun, great for those who love to be in the kitchen and for those like myself who don't even know how to work a stand mixer.

Check out the BROOKLYN BRAINERY and get Schooled #RevelinNY

Being a mom of 2 rambunctious boys, wife, daughter, friend, grad-student, blogger and Crohns patient  I realize sometimes even just the idea of learning something different or exploring a new hobby gets lost in keeping up with the day to day. Flipping through the pages of Time Out New York I remember reading about the The Brooklyn Brainery. They describe themselves as an accessible, community-driven, crowdsourced education.

Affordable classes on anything and everything are hosted there.  Everyday people from Brooklyn and throughout the city can check out the unique classes being offered. The course topics seem to be limitless, if you can think it up they are willing to offer it. The other great part of the Brainery is that if you are passionate about a topic you don't need to be certified or have a degree to teach it, just a willingness to open up someone else's mind to something you think they'll love too!

Course topics have ranged from origami making, bee keeping, sign language, chutney making, reupholstering, exploring philosophy, Haitian creole to the history of pizza. I've been watching a ton of Nate Berkus and glimpsing at D.I.Y projects on Pinterest.com of reupholstered ottomans and I'd love to take that class. I will say it seems they have a good following there because that class and a few others are waiting list only, so I'd sign up quick if something interests you.

Classes meet for either one, two, or three weeks, and are reasonably priced between $15-$30 and you can get certificates to give as gifts. I think I'll be gifting a few for birthdays and Christmas! If you get to check out before I do,  please tell me what class you took and how it was..
