Let the countdown begin! 25 years later and we're officially 100 days away from the release of Disney's live-action installment of The Lion King and they gifted us with the official full-length trailer yesterday. Leaving us in the midst of the Serengeti to witness the unfolding of a story of growing up through tragedy, friendship, love and finding one's place in the world, everyone's all in their feels about it! We're hoping in a good way, because we really loved the classic animated version as kids and can't wait to see the new film in theaters July 19th.
We're really excited for all of the Lion King songs, I remember in junior high school being a member of the chorus and singing the entire soundtrack all day, every day leading up to our group performance, only to become a mama and sit in the audience of our 8 year old's school auditorium to watch him perform the iconic songs with his classmates. Talk about a trip down memory lane and a full circle moment for me. As big Donald Glover and Beyonce fans we can't wait to hear them belt out soulful renditions on the big screen. I'm sure Queen Bey fans around the world are just waiting anxiously for the first glimmer of her voiced as Nala.
Now, it's bad enough that we all had to witness the dramatic death of Mufasa play out in cartoon form, now we'll all be digging for tissues and pretending there's just dust in our eyes as we watch the scene play out in CGI only to be traumatized again.
The trailer, narrated by Scar definitely starts off rather dark and gloomy but Mike and I know the level of laughter's going to be high with Timon voiced by Billy Eichner and Pumbaa voiced by Seth Rogen because they've always managed to crack us up in their more adult roles. It's guaranteed that they'll bring a refreshingly funny spin on the two jungle buddies (who have always reminded me of the legendary comedic duo Abbott and Costello, if they were human) as they teach us the importance of "Hakuna Mata".
What a beautiful glimpse into what we can expect this summer, with extremely realistic wildlife and scenery, a talented cast with legends like James Earl Jones and Alfre Woodard and what's sure to be a dynamic musical score. It's just the update we all needed to survive the wait.
Check out how hyped we are for the new Lion King trailer in our reaction video and let us know which song you can't wait to hear in the comments!
