5 Awesome Books for Early Readers with Diverse Characters to Add to Your Home Library + Giveaway

It's never too early to introduce your young children to diverse characters that represent the beautiful mix of kids found across the globe. From stories of a 8-year-old activist fighting for the rights of the disabled and an energetic toddler protesting against bedtime to the celebrations of family, culture, music, and poetry - Here are 5 awesome books for early readers to add to your home library.

I'm sure bedtime with my 4-year-old nephew Q probably looks all too similar to your routine at home with your own preschoolers. Once the pj's are on and the teeth are brushed, he grabs a handful of books and flops into bed as he begs for one more story after the next.

Anything to avoid going to sleep!

Books with relatable characters that not only look like the reader but that may also be of a different gender, race or ability are great resources to have on our shelves.  When you introduce young children to engaging stories with a mix of characters and show them how to celebrate differences, you teach them about inclusivity early on. It's an eye-opening moment for little ones when they realize despite having different hair or skin color that we all experience the same things, like not wanting to go to bed!

Bedtime for Sweet Creatures
by Nikki Grimes, pictures by Elizabeth Zunon

From tigers to squirrels to snakes, the little boy dodges around his bedtime, until he is tired enough to finally sleep. His imaginative animal friends weave their way through the illustrations, eventually joining him in curling up for the night. Purchase Here

Thinker the Puppy Poet
by Eloise Greenfield, illustrated by Ehsan Abdollahi

In this collection of children's poetry from Coretta Scott King book award winner & author Eloise Greenfield, we meet Thinker the puppy who's also a poet like his owner Jace. Together they turn the world around them into a verse. There's just one problem: Thinker has to keep quiet in public, and he can't go to school with Jace. That is, until Pets' Day. But when Thinker is allowed into the classroom at last, he finds it hard to keep his true identity a secret.

The beautiful style of illustration by Ehsan Abdollahi is definitely engaging and colorful for early readers to enjoy. Purchase Here

All the Way to the Top

by Annette Bay Pimentel, illustrated by Nabi H. Ali

Jennifer Keelan was determined to make a change―even if she was just a kid. She never thought her wheelchair could slow her down, but the way the world around her was built made it hard to do even simple things. Like going to school, or eating lunch in the cafeteria.
Jennifer knew that everyone deserves a voice! Then the Americans with Disabilities Act, a law that would make public spaces much more accessible to people with disabilities, was proposed to Congress. And to make sure it passed, Jennifer went to the steps of the Capitol building in Washington DC to convince them. And, without her wheelchair, she climbed. ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP! Purchase Here

Lorraine
by Ketch Secor, illustrated by Higgins Bond
Lorraine and her Pa Paw spend their days celebrating life with the music of the Tennessee hills. With Pa Paw's harmonica and Lorraine's pennywhistle, the pair can face just about anything. But when a fearsome storm rolls in and their instruments are nowhere to be found, can Lorraine find the music inside herself to get them through? Purchase Here
