Revel in *NYC* Weekend Happenings Nov.18th - Nov. 20th

             With the holidays sneaking up behind us and lots of seasonal shopping to do, enjoy some of the events listed where you can bring back goodies for your fury friends and pet lovers alike or peek into Dekalb market and Calypso St. Bart for unique gifts and accessories. If you are waiting for Black Friday to head off your shopping excursions then take a stroll through one of our city's fabulous museums, zoos or libraries to past the time away. I am beyond excited & looking forward to my first viewing of the Radio Christmas Spectacular {anticipating the special 3D effects} with my boys {CJ is still a believer and can't wait to see Santa} and where ever else our happy feet will take us!  Where do you like to get into the Holiday Spirit and Shop, whether you live here in NYC or some other fabulous spot?  Are you an early bird who hits up the Black Friday shopping at major stores with a checklist and layout of the store in hand? or do you like the unique finds at local boutiques?

Friday Nov. 18th - Nov. 21st  ~ The 19th Annual Canstruction Competition ~
( 10am-6pm, Mon. the 21st closes at 5pm) {E} FREE/Taking canned food donations  
Who says you can't make art out of food cans and labels strategically placed to look like the Super Mario Brothers, Trains, Mr. Potato head and so much more and then donate those canned goods to those in need. Canstruction is an annual design competition  between teams comprised of top architecture and engineering pros and food charity that builds unique structures entirely out of food cans. After structures are judged in categories like "Best use of labels" the cans are donated to City Harvest for distribution right in time for turkey day.

Friday Nov. 18th  ~ Opening of the Union Square Holiday Market ~

 Check out the 18th annual Union Square Holiday Market, from November 18 – December 24. With over 100 merchants bringing in some of the most unique gifts ever, this is the place do your holiday shopping, or just enjoy browsing! Some of the items you will find this year: hand-blown glass housewares…local, handmade leather belts…bags and accessories made from recycled plastic…a variety of handmade jewelry…gloves…hats…Tibetan crafts…there are so many beautiful things—be sure to come and check them out. There will be nibbles and noshes throughout—German delights…sweet and savory treats…cider and cappuccino to keep you warm.

Saturday Nov. 19th & Sunday Nov. 20th  ~ AKC Meet the Breeds  ~
 (10am-5pm)  {E}  Adults $12 / Kids 12 and under $8 after Nov. 18th : $15 for adults & $10 for kids.
Passionate Pooch lovers and Feline fans alike will love this show featuring 160 breeds of dog and 50 breeds of cat that you can interact with all under the roof of the Jacob Javits center. This event is where you can learn about a breed of dog or cats history and unique characteristics directly from the professionals themselves. There will be over 100 vendors selling all of the must haves for pet lovers and their furry friends! Make sure not to miss demonstrations about Obedience, grooming, agility and from law enforcement K9s.

Saturday Nov. 19th & Sunday Nov. 20th ~ Grand Opening of Grumpy Bert & 24karas  ~

Stop by the outdoor Dekalb Market to celebrate the opening of Grumpy Bert a fun shop filled with plush, toys and other goodies and it's neighboring store 24Karas a vendor with beautiful handcrafted vintage feeling pieces {I'm coveting a pair of seahorse earrings}. Have a drink, and take %15 off of a purchase of 2 or more 24Karas merchandise. Enjoy live music in the afternoon and grab a bite to eat.

This cherished tradition delights people of all ages. Marvel at the charming model trains and New York City landmark replicas. Replicas of some of NYC's most famous landmarks are on display and are made from nuts, bark and leaves. Visitors can stroll the spectacular grounds, decorate (and eat!) gingersnaps, break for lunch and hot chocolate, and shop for everyone on your list. New this year: Visitors will have the opportunity to see just how these amazing replicas are made. This weekend is the Holiday Tree lighting (4pm-5:15pm)
where you can view a beautiful Conifer tree being lit for the season and sing along with carolers.

If you ever wondered what it would be like to go into outer space and explore the unknown this new AMNHexoplanets support life! I enjoyed reading Time out New Yorks space scenarios with the curator Michael Shara comparing the exhibits topics to that we've seen in movies and read in books!

Saturday Nov. 19th ~ Junior Zoo Keeper: Tropic Zone @ Central Park ~

Roll up your sleeves and help the keepers care for the animals. From studying animal behavior to creating toys for our curious critters, you have a chance to go behind the scenes and find out what a keeper’s job entails.

Saturday Nov.19th ~ When Ghosts Pop up the Pages: A 3D Christmas Carol ~

Celebrate Charles Dickens and the holiday season with pop-up book creator Chuck Fischer (Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol: A Pop-Up Book). After a brief tour of the exhibition Charles Dickens at 200, children will make their favorite characters from Dickens's classic ghost story come to life as they cut, fold, color, and paste their own three-dimensional pop-up cards to share with family and friends. All supplies included.

 Rudyard Kipling's beloved mongoose Rikki Tiki Tavi teams up with a self-involved bird named Darzee and a sweet muskrat named Chuchu to rid the garden of the cobra Nag. Adapted for the stage by Y York, this funny tale of cooperation and growing up is for audiences of all ages.

Sunday Nov. 20th ~ Bash the Trash 'n' Accordion; the Squeeze Box Strikes Back ~

In 60-minute workshops, the group Bash the Trash tells stories and teaches children how to turn ordinary items into musical instruments. Everyone has fun, uses their imagination and learns about music.
