Weekend Happenings // Things to do in NYC Oct.14th-16th

  TRUCK FARM {thefoodfilmfestival.com}

Not sure how you guys get around the city on the weekends but this one will be a busy one so get your metro cards out, your walking shoes on or your gas tanks filled. This weekend we are having a sleepover with our friends the D'Annas. We discovered a few weekends back that my girl Rachel has yet to ever see the movie Labyrinth. You know, the Jim Henson 80's classic with the fabulous Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie  that tells a story about how Sarah (Jennifer C.) wishes her baby brother Toby away to the Goblin King (David B.) only to regret it. She ends up searching through a labyrinth of foul smelling, ugly yet funny looking and lovable creatures to save the baby before he turns into a goblin. My sis and I would have this movie played repeatedly growing up and I look forward to chilling in my Pj's and singing "Dance magic dance, Dance baby dance" with Tristan, Emily and CJ. What do you have in store for the weekend? I really had a hard time narrowing down my choices to share with you for this weekend because there were just too many!

A Cause for Jubilation: Fun & Sophisticated Pumpkin Decor

With Halloween right around the bend and because of our recent trip to the pumpkin patch this weekend, there has been much debate over how we will decorate our pumpkins this year. I'm not a big fan of carving pumpkins because quite honestly I suck at it. In past years my hubby, CJ and I have had a blast carving pumpkins with our friends, it can get pretty competitive when deciding who's is the best.
My boys and the D'Annas getting to work on their pumpkins! Goblins and crossbones pirates! Our pumpkin designs were created with stencils we got  from Target.
Since I was so caught up in a mommy moment last night I didn't get the chance to post my  fave pumpkin finds that I spotted on pinterest.com. The hubby had the great idea of just using dry erase markers so that Chris could change the face when he wanted, opposed to the carving. I think that's a great idea and probably more fun because the design isn't set in stone. So here's what I found, some are carvings while others are splashes of color and creative design. Enjoy!

Having a Moment: Weaning of Any Sort is Never, Ever Fun!

When I first decided to blog I wasn't sure how much of my life at home I really wanted to share. I'm a pretty real, upfront person but I also know that although I am far from perfect I am horrible about handling constructive criticism even though I ask for it all the time. I've become totally distracted from my post on pumpkin decor for Halloween because I'm listening to baby Tristan wail in agitation in the next room. With our first child CJ , now 6, I read all the baby books: What to Expect, Parenting magazines, Dr. recommended this and Dr. suggested that and took the advise of all the moms before me. Maybe it's because this is our 2nd child, or maybe it's because we've had so much going on, my Crohns disease acting up, my hubbies shoulder surgery, and everything else life throws at you but I just haven't been doing parenting by the "books".

Poor Tristan is not only being weaned off breast feeding, but  we also want to wean him from sleeping in the bed with us. All I can see is pointing fingers, shaking heads and "tsk tsk tsk" being uttered. I honestly don't know what happened. The hubby was working nights when he was born and so he slept during the day in the beginning and out of pure exhaustion I would nurse Tristan to sleep and we'd just canoodle together in my bed and he's pretty much been there ever since. On occasion I would put him down for nap time in his crib, but It would never last and I just didn't have the patience or time. Our days consisted of bringing CJ to school, walking the dog,  breakfast and playtime with Tristan, cleaning house a bit and it was nap time.

By the second half of the day we are off to pick up CJ, go to the park, maybe grocery shop or some form of errands, homework, I don't cook so maybe side prepping (rice, mashed potatoes whatever), baths, dinner, stories and then bed for the kids. The hubby and I may watch a movie and some canoodling of our own, he'd walk the dog and now I'm either in class (finishing my masters) or figuring out this blogging stuff. What am I going to do when I go back to work? As I type I am unsuccessfully ignoring Tristan's piercing crying and I'm tempted to scoop him up from his fathers arms and end his torture. I hate to have him this upset and I don't want to disturb the neighbors or wake up CJ, did I mention it's 12:37 am? The hubby has jury duty and while we enjoyed the long weekend it's back to school and the everyday routine in a few hours.

Well Tristan, who is now walking has managed to speedily waddle his way to the living room with blood shot eyes, seeking out my boobies.  I place him on my lap and he nuzzles my chest like a little puppy as he tries to get to them. I manage to stay strong and I've even passed him back to the hubby. Any suggestions? I know that I can't be the one to put him to sleep because (as my sister calls me) I am the milk giver, giver of milk. The hubby just said "You'd think he was on some sort of drug" but hey boobies can be addictive. This cycle has to be broken it's about 10 months overdue. Looks like we have a few sleepless nights ahead of us. Let the games begin. I'll keep you posted on our success. Our goal is the 17 days until his 1st birthday. Wish us much needed luck!

xoxo, Dellah

Weekend Happenings // Things to do in NYC Oct.7th-10th

Dekalb Market

My mommy duties had called me away from posting yesterday as planned. Tristan had his 2nd dose of the flu shot and has been a hot mess ever since and has made the hubby and I rather cranky. Lots of spewing of yuckiness and up and down fevers from a distraught baby is never fun. Tristan was highly annoyed with the nurse who drew his blood because for some reason the blood wouldn't go down the tube and he had one prick too many! I'm hoping that some sunshine will cheer us all up, we are elated to go to Schmitt Farm tomorrow with our friends and fam. I'm extra excited to take pics of my circus tiger Tristan in a field of pumpkins, that is, if he's feeling better. Fingers crossed. Enjoy this rather nice weather here in the city , nothing like 80 degrees, a cool breeze and qt time with the people you love.

Lil' Monsters in NYC: Check Out Queens County Farm

Whenever I need for the family to take some time out from our fast paced days of repetitive activity, one of our favorite places to go is Queens County Farm. It has always reminded me of the Zuckermans farm from the story Charlotte's W.E.B.  I find it to be the perfect place for the boys to experience farm life (It's the only active running farm in NYC) and it only requires a 35 minute bus ride (working on getting that car). CJ's school takes the students on field trips there every year and in the past they have gotten to milk the cows, go on hay rides, pick pumpkins, get lost and found in a Corn Maize Maze, feed goats and play in the pens with the baby piglets. The Queens County Farm is now selling its very own wines from grapes grown in the vineyard at the farm. This is the only commercial vineyard in New York City. and it also sells eggs, honey, plants and gifts. You can also find them selling merchandise at the Union Square Farmers Market.

I promised a few weekends ago to share pictures from one of their festivals in Sept, so take a peak and mosey on down to check it out for yourself. I promise you'll love it's charm!

Queens County Farm Museum73-50 Little Neck Parkway
Floral Park, New York 11004-1129
(718) 347-3276

We started off our day with the cutest pig races. Some of the featured contestants had names that CJ thought were hysterical: Pork Vader (Darth Vader) and Kevin Bacon. When CJ was two he called pigs by the name of his favorite breakfast staple "Bacon".

After the races we headed off to the petting zoo so that the kids could get up close and personal with some of the barnyard animals. Some animals got a little closer than others!

This pig seemed to know the lettuce was for him and needed to have a conversation with Tristan about handing it over promptly.Tristan thought it was hysterical, I couldn't believe he didn't burst into tears.

Tristan decides the pig could have it after all.

Emily loved the Guinea Pigs and tried to carry one off.

The grown ups were just as excited for the rides as CJ was.

It wouldn't be a County Fair without a few, make you dizzy, fun rides.

or without the yummy treats!

This just proves I'm not the only one who is reminded of this childhood, classic farm story when visiting.
The gift shop was adorable and their were perfect gifts for everyone.

Loving the speckled knitted chicks.

There were also separate vendors who had cute knick- knacks and fabulous vintage stuff, like this stunning pearl bib necklace

The babies had a great time playing with their prizes they won fishing with their dads.
Chris knew if the babies could do it he could too.

So long farm, we had a great time!

Hope you decide to check out the Queens County Farm there are still a few more events before the year is up:

  • October 30th is the Children's Fall festival 11am-4pm
  • October 29th, 30th and 31st check out the haunted house 4pm-7pm
